Sharing the Children

Time sharing of parenting duties, or custody, is often one of the hardest issues to resolve in divorce. If the spouses cannot make an agreement, the matter will be referred to the court clinic and after brief consultation, a cookie cutter schedule will be recommended to the judge. Such schedules seldom please anyone and are often poorly related to the needs of the parties and the children. These schedules once recommended are almost always approved by the judge and contesting the recommendation delays resolution of the divorce and may require expert testimony which is expensive.

The parents usually know the needs of the children and are best able to decide what is right for them. You should discuss the issue with your spouse. While doing so, you should make it plain that you are willing to honor a fair agreement and your spouse will be expected to do likewise.
